Modernism Architecture Meets Art in a Box: Building Global Citizens Through Creativity

Palm Springs Sister Cities continues to expand its commitment to international education by creating meaningful opportunities for young students to learn beyond the classroom. In Spring 2026, our Modernism Architecture Meets Art in a Box educational exchange brought together 107 fourth and fifth-grade students from Vista del Monte Elementary School in Palm Springs and Newland School in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, for an inspiring five-day virtual cultural and educational exchange.
Building on the success of our previous Art in a Box initiatives, this program combined hands-on artistic expression, bilingual education, architecture, and cultural exploration to help students discover the similarities and unique character of their two Sister Cities.
Learning Across Borders
Students received specially prepared Art in a Box kits, with a total of 107 project boxes distributed between the participating schools. Each student used these materials to create artwork inspired by the iconic architecture and cultural identity of Palm Springs and San Miguel de Allende.
The program was led by Jayro Alcántar Armenta, a Dual Immersion Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) with the Palm Springs Unified School District and a Palm Springs Sister Cities Board Member. Lessons were presented in both English and Spanish, giving students the opportunity to strengthen their language skills while learning about architecture, design, history, and cultural traditions.
Vista del Monte's award-winning Dual Immersion Program is dedicated to developing bilingual, culturally proficient students prepared to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world - making it the ideal partner for this international initiative.
Five Days of Discovery
The exchange officially launched on May 13, 2026, with five live Zoom sessions connecting classrooms in both countries.

The instructional sessions were held on May 26, 27, 28, and June 2, culminating in a virtual celebration where students proudly presented their artwork and reflected on what they had learned from one another.
