On May 15, the spirit of international exchange was alive and sizzling at College of the Desert as culinary students—under the guidance of Dr. Kurt Struwe, Chair of the Culinary Arts Department—hosted a vibrant five-course luncheon that transported guests straight to the heart of Oaxaca, Mexico.

In a heartfelt salute to their upcoming educational exchange in San Miguel de Allende, students prepared a gastronomic experience that celebrated the deep flavors and cultural heritage of traditional Oaxacan cuisine. The menu—thoughtfully curated and skillfully executed—was more than a meal. It was a culinary love letter to the experience they’re about to embark on.

Seated around the table were members of the Palm Springs Sister Cities (PSSC) Board and the college’s leadership team, all of whom were treated to a rich showcase of student talent, professionalism, and passion. Each dish was a preview of what these young culinary artists will bring—and learn—when they travel to San Miguel de Allende this June.

But the most touching moment came at the end of the meal: students and staff gathered to record a warming video message to their soon-to-be peers at the Universidad Tecnológica de San Miguel. With smiles, gratitude, and a dash of excitement, they expressed their eagerness to cook, collaborate, and connect during the Sabores de San Miguel Food Festival, one of the region’s most celebrated gastronomic events.
